Bell festival. Festival of bell ringing and commemoration of the Monk Iona Klimenetskiy

The Crystal Bell Ringing Festival takes place annually from January 17 to 19 in the city of Kargopol, Arkhangelsk region.

The museum project "Crystal Ringing" has been implemented since 2005. The peculiarity of the festival is that it is the only winter bell art festival in Russia. It is dedicated to the Orthodox holiday Epiphany.

The main venue was Cathedral Square, which preserved the architectural ensemble of white stone churches and the bell tower, which is the center of the main square of Kargopol. The ensemble creates a single architectural space that contributes to the emotional visual perception of events taking place during the festival.

The Crystal Ringing Festival gathers courageous people who are not afraid of severe frosts and northerly winds. Well-known ringleaders of Russia come to him. The number of ringers and cities participating in the festival is growing every year: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov the Great, Yaroslavl, Vologda, Petrozavodsk, Arkhangelsk, Omsk. In 2009, ringleaders from Belarus and Serbia responded to the invitation of the festival organizers.

Within the framework of the festival, experienced bell ringers conduct master classes; concerts are held on a mobile belfry, children's art contests; new exhibitions open; In the halls of the museum there are concerts of the Svetilen Museum Choir of Spiritual Singing and other creative groups of the city. It should be noted that the festival program includes both traditional events and new ones.
The most striking event of the festival, its culmination is a bell concert on the night of January 18-19, Great Blessing and bathing in the Epiphany font on the Onega River. The effect of perception of what is happening is enhanced by the solemn sound of the bells surrounding the font with ice compositions.
The organizers of the Crystal Ringing Bell Art Festival strive to make every festival unforgettable. Every year, in addition to traditional events, residents and guests of the city are offered new ideas.
In 2010 For the first time, the ensemble “Northern Pearls” (Pomeranian Philharmonic, Arkhangelsk), performers of traditional Sami singing (Norway) took part in the festival’s events, ice sculptures created by craftsmen from Kargopol, Arkhangelsk, Germany adorned Epiphany Eve in Epiphany.
The festival of bell art “Crystal Chimes” is an unforgettable event, a holiday that fills spiritually, gives an emotional charge for a whole year!

In the first part of the festival the following typical bells will sound:

  • Chime - a solemn ringing using all, including small bells.
  • Funeral busting - ringing with alternate blows to the bells from small to large with a subsequent blow "in full."
  • Water chime - chime for the consecration of the Great Epiphany Water, seven beats to each bell in turn from large to small.
  • Great Lent - otherwise, ringing “in two” - ringing on weekdays of Lent and Passion Week: 40 unhurried blows to two (usually the largest) bells.
  • Wedding (booster) - solemn ringing to complete the wedding. It is characterized by the gradual inclusion of increasingly heavy bells and, sometimes, the acceleration of the rhythm.

The second part of the festival will contain traditional ringing from all gathered ringers from different parishes of Russia. At the festival, every bell ringer can please guests with his art of bell ringing and exchange experience with other bell ringers!

In recent years, work is underway to revive the art of bell ringing, lost in the Soviet period. New bell casting factories are opening, casting methods are being reconstructed. Active actions are being taken to recreate and preserve historical traditional ringing, educational activities are being conducted. Ringing schools are opening, events related to bell ringing are being organized.

In the Old Believers, the art of bell ringing developed in a more isolated and complex way. In the tsarist years, the activities of the Old Believers were prohibited, and bell ringing was accordingly prohibited. In the Soviet period, churches were closed everywhere and bells were destroyed and melted down. Currently, in connection with the construction of churches and the registration of new communities, there is a need to revive the art of bell ringing, which is an integral part of Orthodox worship. Bell ringing creates a certain sound atmosphere around the temple, reports on the actions taking place in the temple, carries a peculiar sermon. One of the ways to popularize the art of bell ringing and to improve the general level of mastery of the technique is to conduct cultural events related to bell ringing. Since last year in Siberia in the city of Novokuznetsk passes. Festivals of bells and at the base of the temple in with. B. Nepryakhino. Nepryahinskaya bell tower has a standard selection of 9   bells weighing from 4   before 620   kg

To participate in the festival, everyone is invited ringer of the Old Believer churches from all over Russia and not only. Preferably, no later than   July 20, inform the organizers of their intention to participate in the festival. Telephone for communication on the organization of the bell ringing festival: 8 910 895 68 60 Sergei. The cause of the revival of the art of bell ringing is our common cause - the cause of developing the Old Believers!
