The history of the medieval castle dates back to the 13th century. Its construction began on a steep hill in 1207 by the master of the Order of the Sword. But in 1236 this order was defeated, and the Livonian Order was established in the castle.

Sigulda - amazing city in Latvia. Despite its small size, there are plenty of attractions here. With its monumentality and at the same time grace, visitors are attracted by religious buildings, which will be discussed below.

St. Berthold Lutheran Church

The history of the building dates back to the Middle Ages. The church was erected by order of the envoy of the Pope. In a wooden structure, the construction of which was completed a year later, services were held for 260 years. In the 15th century, the church was rebuilt from stone. At that time it was named after Saint Bartholomew (one of the apostles of Jesus).

The Livonian War destroyed the appearance of the temple; it was restored only in the 17th century.

By 1930, the church of St. Berthold acquired its modern look, later the famous painting “Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane” was brought here. The temple also has an organ that still works. It was assembled literally in parts, as much was lost during the Second World War. Until 1990, services were held in the church.

The temple is made in the Gothic style. Its white walls embody tranquility, and the pointed tower (also known as the bell tower) emphasizes the severity of the design.

The interior of the church is no less attractive:

  • on the ceiling are gilded chandeliers;
  • a carpet path leads from the entrance to the altar;
  • on the sides of the aisle are beautiful white wooden benches;
  • the central place is reserved for the altar.

The church is active. There is an observation deck and a museum of the history of the temple. The church is open every day from 10.00 to 17.00, services are held every Sunday at 11 am and every second Thursday at 07.30. The entrance is free.

Getting to the church is very easy (Baznicas street 2, Sigulda): from the Sigulda railway station, walk 1 km along Raina street to its intersection with Cesu street, which leads to the river. Next, you need to turn right, and the goal is achieved.
